Softball Wins NCAA East 2 Regional with 3-1 Triumph Over Molloy in Extras

Tournament Central
Garden City, N.Y. -- With the game tied 1-1 in the top of the eighth inning and Brenna Martini on first, Nicole Camera stroked a 1-1 pitch from Molloy College's Chelsea Hawks over the right center field fence to send the Adelphi University softball team into NCAA Division II Super Regional Play for the second straight season.

The Panthers (32-20), who went 3-0 in East 2 Regional play to advance to the next round -- which included two extra-inning victories over Molloy -- will now face the winner of the East 1 Regional final between Northeast-10 Conference foes Le Moyne and Southern New Hampshire, who will play on Sunday.

Adelphi, who defeated Molloy 5-0 in nine innings on the first day of regional play on Thursday, got out to the early 1-0 lead in the third inning. After Krista King beat out a one-out infield single back to Hawks, Nicoletta Cuccio was hit by a pitch and Martini walked to load the bases. From there, Camera, who drove in all three runs for Adelphi on the afternoon, knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to score King and give Adelphi the lead.

However, the Lions responded in the bottom of the inning, as a leadoff walk came back to hurt Lindsay Mapes. With runners at the corners and two outs, she induced a grounder back to the circle off the bat of Brianna Dalton, but mishandled the ball in the field to lead to the tying run scoring. After another walk loaded the bases, Mapes got the first of two big outs with the bases loaded in the game -- as she struck out Sarah Rambo to keep the game at 1-1.

Molloy had a chance to win it in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases on a walk, fielder's choice and intentional walk. With two outs, however, Mapes won another battle with Dalton, getting her to foul out to Martini at third to send the game to extras.

In the eighth, Martini led off with a four pitch walk against Hawks to set the stage for Camera, who came through with her ninth home run of the season to give Adelphi the lead. Adelphi looked for more as Lauren Sandelier stroked a two-out single through the left side and stole second, but she was stranded there to send the game to the bottom of the eighth. After allowing a leadoff single, Mapes settled down and retired the next three batters -- including flashing the leather on a line drive right back at her for the final out of the game to improve her record to 19-12 on the season.

NOTES
- Adelphi went 0-3 vs. Le Moyne in the regular season, and did not face Southern New Hampshire.
- The Panthers and Penmen met in last year's East Super Regional, and the Panthers swept the series 2-0 to advance to the College World Series.
