Baseball Comes Up Short Versus Southern Connecticut State, 3-2

Garden City, N.Y. - Despite a run in the bottom of the ninth, the Adelphi University baseball team was unable to get past Southern Connecticut State this afteroon as the Owls (15-23-1/7-14 NE-10/7-8 SW) claimed the Northeast-10 Conference contest 3-2.

Eric Hassell and Alex Zykoff each posted a run and a hit in the effort for the Brown and Gold (22-11/12-11 NE-10/10-7 SW) while Tyler Murphy came away with a hit and a RBI. In relief, David Butler and Michael Demarest combined for 2.1 innings pitched with no runs allowed.

The Owls claimed a run in the top of the third inning as Nick Lambert was able to score on a fielding error after singling with one out. The Brown and Gold scored an unearned run as well in the fourth as Hassell scored on a Kory Cassara at-bat as the sophomore reached on an error.

One run in each the sixth and the seventh allowed Southern Connecticut State to create a two-run lead. Jake Paul led the sixth off with a double and later scored on a single from Greg Zullo to give the Owls a 2-1 lead. In the next inning, Paul drove in the insurance run with a sacrifice fly to right field that plated Lambert.

The Lambert run proved to be crucial as the Panthers brought one across in the bottom of the ninth on a Murphy single to shallow left center, scoring Zykoff. However, Jake Santamaria closed out the frame with his fourth save of the season that included two strikeouts.

Looking ahead, Adelphi returns to the road on Thursday to face Saint Rose at 4:30 pm in Albany. This game was rescheduled from this past Sunday's rainout.

Notes:
- Adelphi sits at 10-7 in the Southwest Division Standings, behind 9-5 records for Saint Rose and Le Moyne.
