Highlights
Denver, Col. – For the third time in the past month, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team was able to upend Le Moyne College. This time, a 13-3 final helped propel the Panthers (21-0) to the NCAA Division II National Championship.
Adelphi advances to the title game this Saturday at 4:00 pm ET/2:00 pm MT to face Florida Southern for the second time this season. The Mocs advanced to Saturday by upending Lindenwood 15-11 earlier today. All the action can be followed at NCAA.com.
Michele Scannell and
Rachel Aitkens each contributed three goals while Scannell added an assist and a ground ball.
Emily Keesling tallied seven points on the afternoon behind two goals and five assists.
Jacqueline Jahelka posted two goals and
Taylor Hayes made eight saves in net.
Six goals helped the Brown and Gold create a 6-0 advantage in the first 18 minutes of the contest. Jahelka scored the first off a pass from Keesling followed by the senior scoring her own on an unassisted strike. Scannell added the third to make it 3-0 in the opening four minutes.
Throughout the next seven minutes, Aitkens strung together all three of the Panthers' goals as Keesling assisted on the final two. The Dolphins ended the run with a tally at 12:20 left in the half as Maggie Monnat found Jacqueline Pardee.
Chelsea Abreu kicked off a 3-0 run for Adelphi to conclude the first half, finishing a free position shot with 7:33 remaining until the break. Scannell scored her second of the game on a free position to make it 8-1 Panthers before Jahelka closed out the scoring with 25 seconds left off a pass from
Danielle Montano.
Scannell continued her scoring to start the second half, finishing off another feed from Keesling. The Dolphins scored two of the next three goals, however,
Rachel O'Brien was able to get on the board by breaking free on a cut and finish from Keesling.
With the score at 11-3 with 17:52 left in regulation, Scannell found
Kate Beier before Keesling allowed the clock to run at 13-3 with a free position shot.
Adelphi did not score in the final 15 minutes, however, the Dolphins were also held scoreless until Alexis Garbarino found the back of the net with 23 second left to mark the final score at 13-4.
Notes
- Adelphi defeated Florida Southern 16-10 in the second game of the season. The Panthers traveled to face the Mocs in Lakeland, Fla. on Monday, February 22.
- The Brown and Gold are seeking an eighth title in program history, most in NCAA Division II history. LIU Post is second with four championships.
- Keesling fell one point shy of her career-high, a mark she set against Florida Southern earlier this year.
