Softball Bounced from NCAA Division II Championship by #16 Armstrong State, 1-0

Denver, Colo. -- Needing a win to keep their NCAA Division II Tournament hopes alive, the Adelphi University softball team came out on the wrong side of a 1-0 decision to the #16-ranked Pirates of Armstrong State University at the Regency Athletic Complex in Denver on Thursday.

With the pair of defeats, Adelphi (35-22) sees its season end as East Regional and Super Regional champions for the second consecutive year. Armstrong State's Jane Trzaska threw a two-hitter to win the pitchers' duel against Lindsay Mapes, who hurled seven innings of one-run ball with four walks and two strikeouts to end her season with a 22-14 overall record.

"That's the kind of game you want to be in, when you have a chance until the last out," Head Coach Bree Nasti stated. "We competed; I love my kids and this team so much."

Adelphi's only real threat in the game came in the first inning, as Krista King singled for the first of the pair of hits that Trzsaka allowed to lead off. She then found herself on third with none out, as she took two bases on a wild pitch and a passed ball, but was unable to come around to score.

To her credit, Mapes straded seven Pirates on base over the first four innings, keeping her team in the game. In the first, she worked around a leadoff single and a two-out hit batter by getting a groundout to Brenna Martini at third for the force play, while forcing a popup to Fallon McCarthy at first after a two-out walk and infield single in the third. Mapes' biggest test to that point then came in the fourth, as a leadoff double turned into a bases-loaded, one out situation after an infield single and and error.

However, the junior pitcher showed much of the mettle that she did throughout the tournament, getting the next two hitters to ground out to end the threat and keep it a 0-0 tie. The Pirates broke through in the next inning, as a walk and an infield single got Mapes into trouble, and a two-out infield single to third base saw the first run of the game score. Although Mapes did well to end the inning after that, the Adelphi bats were silenced by Trzaska, who allowed a one-out single to Christina Palmenteri in the sixth as the only other hit in the game.
