Bowling Finishes in 15th Place at Music City Classic

Nashville, Tenn. -- With a 9-6 overall record, the Adelphi University bowling team finished in 15th place at the Music City Classic, held over the weekend in Nashville and hosted by Vanderbilt University.

Laura Zaugg paced the Panthers individually, as she posted a 26th place finish in a field of nearly 200 bowlers. The junior posted a 193.5 average across traditional play, while cracking the 200-pin mark three times in six traditional matches, including a high of 234 against Jackson State. Also finishing in the top 50 for the Brown and Gold was Rebecca Gotterbarn, as she checked in 42nd place with an average of 186.67.

In Baker play on the first day, the Panthers fell against St. Francis Brooklyn and defeated Florida A&M, before falling to both LIU Brooklyn and Farleigh Dickinson in relatively close matches -- including a 34-pin difference against the Knights. However, Adelphi rallied to win its next two matches to post an even 3-3 Baker record on the afternoon, defeating Sam Houston State and Arkansas State. With a 949-923 decision, the Panthers were one of just four teams to hand Arkansas State a loss in the tournament, as they were the winners with an 11-4 overall record.

In traditional play, Adelphi posted a 4-2 record as they were led by a 234 by both Zaugg and Jackie Castelli in their opener against Jackson State, a match the Panthers won by a 986-907 final. After dropping a decision to Monmouth, Lena Sorrentino's 223 led Adelphi to a 916-881 win over Valparaiso, and Gotterbarn's high of 214 on the day helped push them past the University of Maryland at Eastern Shore by a 961-894 decision. In two very close matches to end the second day of traditional play, Gotterbarn posted her second score over 200 -- a 202 -- to help the Panthers edge Elmhurst by just seven pins, 880-873, before they fell by just six pins to Alabama State, 924-918.

On the final day of play, Adelphi was drawn in the bracket to face Tulane, whom the Brown and Gold defeated to advance into a meeting with North Carolina State A&T. After falling at that stage, the Panthers edged Tulane once more in the bracket to end the tournament on a high note and finish in 15th place.

The Panthers return to action in the East Coast Conference Championships for their final event of the season from March 25-27 at Kutztown.

NOTES
- Gotterbarn is a four-time ECC Bowler of the Week to lead the team ahead of the conference tournament.
