Softball Sweeps Georgian Court in Non-Conference Action, 5-4 and 8-0

Garden City, N.Y. – The Adelphi University softball team remained perfect in non-conference play at home on Tuesday, as the Panthers swept a doubleheader from the visiting Georgian Court Lions, 5-4 and 8-0, and ran their winning streak to eight games.

Brenna Martini paced the offense for the Brown and Gold on the afternoon, as she drove in four runs on a 3-5 performance at the plate – including her fourth home run of the season in game one. Krista King drove in three runs in the leadoff spot across the doubleheader, including a two-run triple in the nightcap, while Fallon McCarthy drove in the tying run in game one and put together a 3-5 day at the plate with a run scored.

Kristin Fealy started both games for the Panthers in the circle and picked up two victories, benefitting from the Adelphi rally to get the win in game one before throwing four shutout innings in game two while allowing just one hit. Nicole Camera got the save in the first game for the Brown and Gold as she pitched two scoreless innings, while Jessica Vadala delivered a pair of zeros for the Panthers in game two.

Game 1
The Panthers fell behind 2-0 in the opening inning as the visiting Lions stroked three hits off of Fealy en route to scoring the first run, before the second scored on an extended rundown play before the third out was made. The Panthers remained off the board until the bottom of the third, when Christina Palmenteri led off with a double and Lauren Sandelier singled ahead of Martini, who cracked her fourth home run of the season over the left field fence to bring the Brown and Gold within a run.

Fealy settled down after that, as she retired the side in order in the fourth to allow the Panthers to go back to work on offense. Leading off, Stephanie Staiano singled to right but was erased on a fielder's choice off the bat of Danielle Cutuli who later found herself in scoring position due to a Lions' throwing error. The Panthers took advantage, as McCarthy laced a single to left that scored Cutuli and tied the game at 4-4. From there, Adelphi got consecutive singles from Palmenteri and King before Sandelier gave Adelphi the lead by driving in pinch runner Taylor Ludewig from third base on a fielder's choice.

After Fealy stranded the tying run at second in the fifth to keep the shutout in tact, Camera shut the door on the Lions in relief. Entering the game with one on and none out in the sixth, the reigning Northeast-10 Conference Player of the Week also stranded the tying run at second by inducing three groundouts and worked around a one-out error in the seventh to give Adelphi the win.

Game 2
The second game was the inverse of the opener, as the Panthers put up a three spot in the bottom of the first to give Fealy a cushion for the rest of the game. After Nicoletta Cuccio and Martini reached on singles, Camera drove them both in with a double to right center to open the scoring for the Panthers. After Megan Lewis followed with a single to put runners at the corners, Staiano chipped in with the RBI groundout to give the Brown and Gold a 3-0 lead.

To her credit, Fealy allowed just one hit in four innings of work, and after she stranded that runner in the second, the Panthers added two more runs in the bottom of the frame. After McCarthy led off with a single, she advanced to second on King's groundout and scored on Cuccio's triple; later in the inning, Martini drove home Cuccio with a single to center to give Adelphi a 5-0 lead.

With the innings continuing to pass by scoreless as Georgian Court reliever Amanda Finn and Vadala kept the teams off the board, Adelphi broke through for three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to get the game called. A pair of singles from McCarthy and Palmenteri got the inning started, King drove them in with a triple to left center to make it a 7-0 game, and Sandelier drove her home with a deep fly to center to end the game at 8-0.

The Panthers return to action tomorrow against Long Island rival LIU Post, in a doubleheader pushed up from Thursday due to the forecast. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm.

NOTES
- Camera and Sandelier were honored by the NE-10 on Monday as Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively.
- Camera is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak, while Palmenteri is on a six-game streak.
