Worcester, Mass. -
Salvatore Tuttle paced the Adelphi University offense in a 18-8 Northeast-10 victory over Assumption College and became the program's all-time leader in career goals at the Division II level. With the victory, the sixth-ranked Panthers improve to 5-1 overall and remain unblemished in the conference at 3-0, while the Greyhounds fall to 1-4 and 1-1 in the NE-10.
Tuttle entered the contest with 149 career goals, which tied him for the program's Division II record, but he found the back of the Assumption net six times to propel him past Wes Green's school record which was set in 2006. Tuttle now sits at 155 goals for his career and is approaching the all-time mark of 175, which was set by Jeff Reh in 1990.
In addition to his six goals, Tuttle added two assists to lead all players with eight points on the afternoon.
Gordon Purdie, Jr.,
Anthony Gomes and
Cory Stavis chipped in three points each. Purdie, Jr. recorded three tallies, while Gomes added one goal and two assists and Stavis flipped that stat line, picking up two goals and picking up one helper.
Tom Nuckel was the only other member of the Brown and Gold with more then one point, collecting two goals.
Joe Giardina led the defense with four caused turnovers, while teammates
Bryan Moritt and Gomes caused two turnovers each.
John English continued his strong play at the face-off "X" as he won 13 of 22 attempts and grabbed seven ground balls -- one more then Gomes.
John McGrath was credited with his fifth win of the season, as he made eight saves during his 60 minutes in the net.
Purdie, Jr. opened up the action with back-to-back goals and then
Chris Racalbuto put the finishing touches on Adelphi's three goal opening run, after he found the back of the Assumption net with 9:42 left in the first 15 minutes. The Greyhounds' Travis Reid broke the Adelphi spell to make it a 3-1 contest, but Tuttle went on a three-goal binge of his own to put the Panthers on top, 6-1, with 3:45 remaining in the first.
However, the hosts did not go quietly, ripping off three straight of their own to get within two goals, 6-4 on a man-up tally with 12:57 left in the first half. Adelphi crept away from Assumption over the next 23 minutes by scoring five of the eight total goals to double down on their lead, 11-7 with 5:40 left in the third stanza.
Michael Osmundsen scored on an unassisted effort with just 82 seconds remaining in the third period to push the Brown and Gold lead to five goals, 12-7 and kick off a run of seven goals that ended with just 66 seconds left in the game off the stick of Gomes to effectively put the game away at 18-7. The Greyhounds managed one more goal with 11 ticks left in the game, but time ran out and Adelphi walked away with a 18-8 victory.
Adelphi returns to action on Saturday, March 19 when they travel to Manchester, New Hampshire for a 1:00 pm showdown with Southern New Hampshire University.
