Adelphi Athletics and TD Bank to Celebrate Black History Month on February 9

Curtis Minnis '77 will be this year's keynote speaker.

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will host its 14th Annual Black History Month Celebration on Tuesday, February 9, at 6:30 p.m. This year's event, again presented by TD Bank, will include a talk with featured speaker Curtis Minnis '77, who is a Managing Director of Global Sales with the Fedex Corporation.

As a Managing Director of Global Sales, Minnis directs a team of strategic account managers who design and deliver optimal logistic services and supply chain solutions for large global customers.  Prior to his tenure at FedEx Minnis worked as a sales profession as part of MCI's Global Market team before assuming a director position within AT&T's Signature Client Group.

A 1977 graduate of Adelphi, Minnis remains deeply engaged with the university community.  He is a founding member of the Multi-Cultural Chapter of Adelphi's Alumni Association, maintains membership on the Executive Board of the Panther Club, and was the recipient in 2007 of The Frank Cassell Memorial Award for his contributions to further educational and competitive excellence within Adelphi's student-athlete community.

As a member of Adelphi's Cross Country/Track and Field teams while an undergrad, Curtis set three still standing school records, two in individual events and as a member of an outstanding relay team.  Additionally, he was a contributing member of the 1975-76 team, which received the Adelphi Athletics Panther Legendary Team Award in 2013 at the Hall of Fame Dinner.

Minnis is also currently vice president of the Board of Trustees for the Kips Bay Boys and Girls Club, a New York City based non-profit organization with a membership of 11,000 children.  The club is tasked with providing mentoring, guidance, leadership, safe haven and functional programming for a largely at-risk youth population.

The event consists of a buffet dinner in the Campbell Lounge located in the Center for Recreation and Sport. Over the years, with the assistance of the Multicultural Alumni Chapter, it has attracted many alumni back to campus, including many who had lost touch with the university. For more information and to purchase tickets, at $30 each, please contact Courtney Chrisman at cchrisman@adephi.edu or 516-877-4241.

Past keynote speakers include former Adelphi Dean of Athletics and Head Track Coach Ron Bazil, Congressman Gregory Meeks '75, author Patricia Elam '76, and Board of Trustees Kenneth Banks '74, Dr. N. Gerry House, attorney/author Alicia M. Crowe, NCAA VP for Diversity & Inclusion, Charlotte Westerhaus, ECAC Commissioner Rudy Keeling and most recently reporter Herb Boyd and Eric Martin '06, president of the Pendant Group.
