Riverside, Calif. -- Returning to the campus of California Baptist University on Saturday to close out their preseason swing through Southern California, the Adelphi University softball team suffered a pair of setbacks to the host Lancers, 2-1 and 7-3, to drop all four games of the series on the trip.
Lindsay Mapes pitched all 12 innings across both games for Adelphi (2-8), as she allowed a total of nine runs (four earned) on 17 hits and suffered the defeat in both games.
Nicole Camera went 2-6 over both games, as she drove in a pair of runs in the second, while
Brenna Martini went 2-3 with an RBI in game two and
Christina Palmenteri accounted for Adelphi's lone RBI in the first game.
Game 1With just eight hits combined between the two teams, the opening game was a pitchers' duel between
Lindsay Mapes and Ashley Coleman for the duration, as
Megan Lewis recorded the first hit for either side in the top of the fourth inning. In the first five innings, both Adelphi and Cal Baptist had two instances of a runner in scoring position but were unable to cash out a run, while Lewis caught a runner stealing to end the fifth for the first time this season.
However, the home team broke through in the bottom of the sixth, as they got two runners into scoring position against Mapes with just one out in the inning. In a lengthy at bat in which Miller fouled off several tough pitches, she finally won the battle and lined a two-run single into center field to put the Lancers in the lead 2-0.
Adelphi would not go quietly in the seventh, however, as
Christina Palmenteri came to the plate with
Danielle Cutuli and
Fallon McCarthy on base and one out looking to tie the game. Palmenteri drove the ball to the right field fence for a double -- her third of the season -- to drive in Cutuli and put herself in scoring position as the go-ahead run. However, Adelphi got no closer from there as the Lancers retired the final two batters to take the first game of the afternoon.
Game 2The second game was in contrast to the first, as both teams combined for 10 runs and 21 hits over the course of the game. With Mapes back to the mound for the Brown and Gold, the Lancers tagged her for three runs in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead. Adelphi responded in the top of the fourth as
Krista King reached on a one-out infield single and
Nicoletta Cuccio doubled to put them both into scoring positon. In the next at bat, Camera singled to plate both runners and stole second to put the tying run in scoring position; however, Lewis was caught looking to end the threat.
It remained a one-run game after the Lancers tacked on another run in the bottom of the fourth as Cuccio singled to third base and was driven in by Martini's RBI double in the top of the fifth. However, Adelphi was unable to again plate the elusive tying run, and the Lancers put the game out of reach in the bottom of the sixth.
After Martini started a 5-3 double play to put the Panthers one out away from ending the inning, a two-out walk came back to haunt Mapes. From there, three consecutive hits -- two for extra bases -- led to three more runs for the home team and a 7-3 score for the Lancers, which proved the be the final as the Brown and Gold was retired in order in the seventh.
The Panthers return back east tomorrow, and return to action on Saturday March 5, when they travel to the campus of Wilmington University for a non-conference double-header against the Wildcats.
NOTES- Martini (.462) and Lewis (.304) each recorded batting averaged over .300 on the 10-day trip.
- Martini leads the team in RBIs with seven, while Camera has six thus far.
