Softball Drops a Pair at California Baptist, 10-1 and 2-1

Riverside, Calif. -- The Adelphi University softball team dropped a pair of games to the Lancers of California Baptist on Wednesday afternoon in contrasting fashion, losing the first game 10-1 in five innings before suffering a walk-off 2-1 defeat in the nightcap.

Brenna Martini went 2-4 across the two games for Adelphi (2-4) with the RBI in game two, while Nicole Camera went 1-3 in the opener and accounted for Adelphi's other RBI on the afternoon. The Lancers (11-3) got six RBIs from Krista Mann in game one, helped in part by a grand slam, and Jordan Mowatt drove in the winning run for the home team in the second game.

Game 1
The Lancers scored all of their runs in the first three innings of the opener, socring one in the first, two in the second and exploding for seven in the third en route to the run-ruled victory. Cal Baptist tagged Kristin Fealy for all 10 runs on seven hits, as the freshman walked four in 2.1 innings.

Sarah Murphy walked with one out in the bottom of the first and was driven in on Hannah Thieroff's RBI single to lead 1-0. The home team tacked on a pair on Mann's two-run single in the second before Murphy lined into a double play back to Fealy to end the threat. Adelphi got one run back in the top of the third after Christina Palmenteri led off with a double and Camera doubled her home one batter later. With the tying run at the plate, however, Kelleye Springstead struck out Martini and Stephanie Staiano to keep it a two-run game.

The game got away from Adelphi in the bottom of the third, as three of the first four batters reached base to make it a 4-1 game. From there, two hits and a walk again loaded the bases for the Lancers to set the stage for Mann's grand slam before Jessica Vadala came in to finish the inning for the Panthers. Despite loading the bases with one out in the fourth and getting two runners on in the fifth, the Panthers were unable to scratch out a run before the game was called.

Game 2
Martini got Adelphi off to a fast start in the second game, parking her second home run of the season over the left field fence with two outs in the opening inning. The Panthers remained in the lead until the bottom of the third inning, when the Lancers put together three straight two out singles off of Lindsay Mapes to tie the game. She kept it there, however, as Erin Burkhart flew out to end the inning.

Adelphi got little going on offense in the ensuing innings until the top of the sixth, when Palmenteri led off with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and stole third. At that point, the game was delayed briefly for the weather, before resuming a short while later; upon the resumption, Camera grounded out to short before Martini walked to put runners at the corners, but Staiano grounded out back to the mound to end the threat. To ber credit, Mapers worked out of jams in the fifth and sixth, stranding a runner at second in the fifth and keeping two runners pinned on the bases after they reached second and third with one out in the sixth.

A one out walk to Nicoletta Cuccio gave Adelphi a look in the top of the seventh, but nothing came of it as Danielle Cutuli flew out before Cuccio was caught stealing second to allow the Lancers to have a chance at the walkoff. Pinch hitter Heather Smith reached on a fielding error by Cutuli to open the seventh, as the shortstop misplayed a grounder to her right to allow the winning run to get on base; from there, Smith was sacrificed over by Tayler Castro before Mowatt split the defense in right center to drive in the game-winner and give the Lancers the sweep.

After a day off tomorrow, the Panthers will take on Azusa Pacific in a double-header on Friday at 7pm and 9pm ET.

NOTES
- The Panthers have completed three of five double headers in their swing through southern California this week.
- Adelphi returns to Cal Baptist for a double header to close out the trip on Saturday.
