Salem, W. Va. - The Adelphi men's basketball team erupted for 60 points in the first half, including 39 from
Michael Coffey and
Chris Millender, building a 31-point halftime lead on the way to a 104-64 victory over Salem International University this afternoon, November 29 in Salem, West Virginia.
Coffey led all scorers with a career-high 38 points for Adelphi (6-1), including a program-record tying eight triples (8-15), and also picked up four rebounds and four assists. Millender posted a new season-high in points by one, chipping in 24, including 14 in the first half and grabbed 10 rebounds, completing his double-double effort.
Jack Laffey and
Austin Beech joined that duo in double figures with 12 and 13 points respectively, and
Manny Suarez contributed nine points and 10 Â rebounds.
The host Tigers (0-7) kept the contest close in the early going of the first half, never trailing by more then two buckets, including pulling within one make on a Jordan Robinson jumper with 12:32 to play, 17-14. However, a Millender make just 10 seconds later, in the paint, sparked an Adelphi eruption. When the dust cleared on the Panther run, the Brown and Gold ripped off 43 points in the final 12:22 and held the hosts to 15, creating a 31 point bulge for Adelphi at the break, 60-29.
Salem International was never able to recover from the Panthers first half onslaught and would only get as close as 25 points in the second half, on a Jarius Farrow jumper at the 14:05 mark, 67-42. Adelphi responded with seven straight points to push the advantage back over the 30 point mark, 74-42. The Brown and Gold claimed their largest lead of the game, 102-57, on two made Beech free throws with 3:15 remaining on the clock and then coasted to a 104-66 win.
Adelphi returns to action on Thursday, December 1 when they welcome local rival Molloy College to the Center for Recreation and Sports in Garden City for a 7:00 pm tip-off.
