Bowling Earns Top 10 Finish at Warhawk Classic

Whitewater, Wisc. -- Three top 30 finishers in traditional play led the way for the Adelphi University bowling team in Wisconsin over the weekend, as the Panthers finished in 10th place overall at the Warhawk Classic hosted by the University of Wisconsin at Whitewater.

Rebecca Gotterbarn led the way with a 19th place finish and an average of 206.4. Katelyn LaRocca earned 25th place behind a 197.2 average, while freshman Olivia Lopera had her best finish of the season thus far with a 195.4 average for 29th place. 

On the first day in Baker play, the Panthers responded well after opening losses to Stephen F. Austin and McKendree, taking out Maryville by a margin of nearly 300 pins, 1,047 to 759. The Adelphi keglers followed up that win with a 964-878 decision over Valparaiso, before dropping the final Baker match to Vanderbilt to end the first day of play at 2-3 overall. 

Adelphi got off the a strong start on day two in traditional play, as Lopera rolled a team-high 236 and was joined over 200 by Gotterbarn (207) and LaRocca (203) in a defeat of LIU Brooklyn, 935-873; LaRocca anchored the Panthers in their second win as well, rolling a 205 to lead the way in a win over Lincoln (Mo.). Up next, the keglers faced Arkansas State, the eventual tournament champions, and dropped a close 1,133-984 decision in which Gotterbarn tallied a 232 and Lopera recorded a 213. In the final match of the day against Elmhurst College, Lopera bowled a team-high 227 to lead Adelphi to a 917-839 win over Elmhurst College.

In Sunday's championship bracket, the Panthers were drawn to start the day against LIU Brooklyn, where the fell to the Blackbirds in a rematch of Saturday's play. However, the Panthers bounced back to defeat St. Francis (Pa.) as they moved through the bracket, before again falling to the Blackbirds for a 10th-place finish.

The Panthers return to the lanes over the weekend of Nov. 18-20, when they travel to the UMES Hawk Classic in Millsboro, Del.
