Brookville, N.Y. -- A career-high 31 points from
Calli Balfour saw her become the 22nd member of the Adelphi University women's basketball team's 1,000 point club, and her milestone helped the Panthers defeat LIU Post, 69-49, on Saturday night at the Pratt Recreation Center.
The win for the Brown and Gold (1-1) is head coach
Missy Traversi's first at the helm of the Panthers in her first season, as the Panthers wrapped up play at the season-opening ECC/NE-10 Challenge. Balfour also tied career highs in rebounds (13) and steals (6) to pace all scorers, while
Sierra Clark posted her second double-double (11 points, 12 rebounds) and
Simone Hobdy chipped in 14 points.
Julia Gnieser came off the bench for five rebounds and five assists, while
Sierra Schrader grabbed seven rebounds. The Pioneers (0-2) got a team-high 15 points from Mikaya Moore in the setback, while Kristen Olsen added 10.
The Pioneers opened up the game with a lead of 11-8 over the first 4:10, before Adelphi went on a 10-2 scoring run that included threes from Balfour and Hobdy to take a 20-13 lead. Adelphi never trailed again, opening up a 10-point lead after the first quarter, and sprinting out on an 11-0 run that spanned over six minutes to start the second quarter, capped by a layup and one from
Morgan Hellyer. Adelphi's final margin in the second quarter came out to 14 points, as the Panthers outscored the hosts 18-4 to lead 43-19 at the break.
Adelphi's big first half proved to be a cushion for the second 20 minutes, as the Pioneers held a slim scoring advantage in the third quarter at 14-10. Balfour scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to put herself one point away from the Panther record books, before knocking down a jumper with 4:57 to go to break the 1,000 point mark.
The Panthers open up Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday, Nov. 16 when they travel to Southern Connecticut State University for a 5:30 pm contest.
