Pleasantville, N.Y. - The Adelphi University ended two straight days of competition to open the season with a 95-78 victory against Georgian Court earlier this evening on the floor of Pace University, moving to 2-0 to start the season.
The Panther (2-0) entire starting-five reach double-figures on the evening, led by 23 from Jack
Laffey, who also added eight rebounds and seven assists along with two steals.
Michael Coffey also reached the 20-point plateau with 20 points exactly behind eight made free throws. Chris
Millender and
Manny Suarez combined for 30 points in the front court while Connor
McGuinness procuded 11 points and seven assists.
Keith Hughes led the Lions (0-2) with 19 points on 7-of-13 shooting to go along with eight rebounds.
Juwuan Carter notched 11 points off the bench while Tony Ellington, Jr. played 19 minutes towards 16 point and two steals.
The Brown and Gold shot an efficient 76.0 percent from the field during the first half to create a 55-27 halftime advantage behind 16 points from
Laffey and
Millender adding 14. The advantage continued to grow throughout the first half, with a five-point lead of 21-16 with 10:02 remaining turning into a 28-point halftime lead as Adelphi outscored Georgian Court 34-11 in the final 10 minutes of the period.
The Panthers controlled a 24-14 advantage in points in the paint while also creating 12 points off of six Georgian Court turnovers. In addition to 19 made field goals in the opening 20 minutes, Adelphi also converted 12 free throws while the Lions went 0-for-6 from beyond the arc.
The halftime lead proved to be needed for Adelphi as Georgian Court outscored the Panthers 51-40 in the second half, however, only cutting the 28-point halftime lead to 95-78 by the end of regulation. The Lions managed to cut the deficit to as a low as 17 points with 2:31 remaining after the Brown and Gold produced a game-high 33-point advantage at 75-42 with 9:49 remaining on a layup from Suarez.
Adelphi ended the contest shooting 64.0 percent (32-for-50) from the floor in addition to 22 free throws made, compared to Georgian Court shooting 37.5 percent (27-for-72) on field goal attempts. The impressive shooting was aided by 20 assists, 14 of which came from the sophomore duo of
McGuinness and
Laffey.
Looking ahead, the Brown and Gold begin Northeast-10 Conference play on Wednesday with a trip to New Haven, Conn. to face Southern Connecticut at 7:30 pm.

- Additionally, Adelphi tied last season's high of 22 made free throws.
