West Hempstead, N.Y. -- In a rematch of last season's Northeast-10 Championship, the Adelphi University women's tennis team scored a crucial win for their playoff hopes this season over the league-leading Stonehill College Skyhawks on Sunday at Hempstead Lake Indoor Tennis Center.
The Panthers (8-3, 8-3 NE-10) handed the Skyhakws (10-2, 10-1 NE-10) their first NE-10 loss of the year thanks in part to winning two of three doubles matches.
Elizabeth Kallenberg returned to the Adelphi lineup to partner
Samantha Perri for an 8-5 win at No. 2 doubles to start Adelphi's day, before the Stonehill team of Emma Prinos and Nicole Downey won by an identical score at No. 3, despite
Vanja Savic and
Maria Bruzon Gutierrez pulling from 2-5 to 5-5, to even the match at 1-1. The key match came at No. 1, where
Rebecca Fakas and
Karen Serina edged Alexandra Vo and Victoria Barbetta by a 9-7 score to secure the 2-1 lead.
A retirement win for Vo over Kallenberg at No. 2 and a straight sets win for Downey over Savic at No. 4 gave the Skayhawks a 3-2 lead, but Fakas dropped just three games to defeat Barbetta at No. 1 to put the match at 3-3. From there, Serina rallied in strong fashion after dropping a tight second set to roll to a 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 win at No. 3, before the match was again tied thanks to Stonehill's O'Donnell's win at No. 6. That set the stage for Perri to deliver the clinching win, edging Prinos at No. 5 singles to give Adelphi the win.Â
"We are so happy to have all the women back in action after a testing season to get this win today," Head Coach
Joanna Haich said. "The display of tennis was outstanding today by all women from doubles to singles."
