Worcester, Mass. -- Four wins in singles helped the Adelphi University women's tennis team stage a comeback in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship first round on Wednesday afternoon, as the No. 6 seeded Panthers erased a 2-1 deficit after doubles to win 5-3 overall.
The Brown and Gold (9-4) fell behind 2-1 at the close of doubles play following a tight victory for Assumption's (10-3) Paige Benoit and Kristen Carbone at No. 2 over
Samantha Perri and
Elizabeth Kallenberg, 8-6. The Panthers' doubles point came thanks to a win by
Rebecca Fakas and
Karen Serina at top flight, as the Adelphi duo recorded an 8-5 victory.
However, the Panthers were not about to go down without a fight, as Perri recorded the first point in singles thanks to a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 4, the flight at which she earned NE-10 All-Conference First Team honors earlier on Wednesday. Nonetheless, the No. 3 seeded Greyhounds went back on top as Carbone dropped just two games against
Maria Bruzon Gutierrez at No. 6, putting the home team up 3-2.
However, Adelphi rolled from there, as Kallenberg and Fakas stepped up at No. 1 and No. 1 singles, respectively, dropping just a combined seven games across their four sets to put the Panthers one match win away from advancing. The clinching point came from Serina, who avenged a 6-0, 3-6, 10-2 regular-season loss to Benoit with a 6-3, 6-3 win to put Adelphi into the semifinals.
"We are very happy of the outcome of the match today," Head Coach
Joanna Haich said. "After being down 2-1 in doubles, with Assumption playing great, all the Adelphi women fought in singles to continue our playoff trip. We are excited to face SNHU in the semis
on Friday."
