#9 Field Hockey Soars Past Pace in Second Half, 2-1

Garden City, N.Y. -- After a scoreless opening half, the Adelphi University field hockey team erased a one-goal deficit to win 2-1 over the visiting Pace University Setters in Northeast-10 Conference action on Tuesday night.

The Panthers' (8-4, 5-2 NE-10) offense was working early in the first 35 minutes, as they outshot the Setters (6-6, 3-4 NE-10) by a 5-0 margin and had a 7-0 edge in penalty corners, but Pace keeper Lesly Sanchez Alvarez made three stops to keep the Brown and Gold off the board.

However, the Setters struck first in the second half off a pair of penalty corners, as Jenna Sanossian scored her fifth goal of the season off the set piece by Louisa Wegener, beating Amanda Gargiulo as she came out of the cage for a 1-0 lead.

Adelphi quickly applied pressure down the other end, as Adelphi was awarded three penalty corners in the next three minutes, leading to two shots off the stick of Lena Pollich. However, Sanchez Alvarez saved the first and the second was blocked to keep the lead, and the game would not be tied until the 46:11 mark after Emily Power put back a saved Elissa Frein shot into the goal for her seventh tally of the season.

Over the next seven minutes, Sanchez Alvarez made two stops an Gargiulo made another to keep it a 1-1 tie, but the Brown and Gold came through with just under seven minutes on the clock. Jamie Ahrens passed the ball up from the top of the circle to Elizabeth Mercuri, who finally broke down Sanchez Alvarez in goal for the game-winning tally. From there, the Adelphi defense did not allow the Setters a shot opportunity in their attempt to tie the game.

Adelphi held an 18-4 edge in total shots, including 12-3 in shots on goal, while also holding an 18-4 edge in total penalty corners. Sanchez Alvarez made a total of 10 saves for Pace in the loss, while Gargiulo made two stops total.

The Panthers are back in action on Friday at 3 pm, when they take on Lindenwood in non-conference action.

NOTES
- Tonight marked the Panthers' first victory of the season in which they did not score first.
- Adelphi alumna Kayte Kinsley returned to Garden City tonight as the head coach of the Setters, in her first year at the helm.
