Gardem City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University volleyball team used the serve to ace its way past Queen College (4-14) on Monday, October 10 in Garden City, New York by the score of, 3-0 (25-21, 25-19, 25-13), thanks in part to seven service aces from
Melissa Rigo.
Prior to the game, Adelphi recognized two of its seniors for hitting remarkable career milestones.
Mandy Stanislovaitis became the sixth player in program history to record 1,000 kills earlier this season and
Sierra Crook is the first player to earn 2,000 digs.
The Panthers (10-8) were lifted by 16 service aces on the night, getting seven from Rigo and four from
Amanda Borges, who also led the team in kills with nine and seven respectively.
Megan Manierski recorded a team-high 23 set assists, while
Sierra Crook earned a team-high 17 digs.
Adelphi used a 9-1 run, that included three straight service aces from Rigo, to turn a 10-10 tie into a, 19-11 Panther advantage during the first set. Queens closed to within three points, 24-21, on a kill by Lauren Kehoe, however, a Knight attack error gave the hosts the victory, 25-21.
Queens opened the second set with a rally, claiming an 11-7 lead near the midway point. The Brown and Gold turned in a three-point spurt, including two more aces from Rigo, to knot the game at 13. The second set continued to be a tight affair, when a Borges' kill sparked a 6-0 run that turned a 19 all tie into a 25-19 Adelphi win.
The third set was all Adelphi from the start, with the Panthers never trailing. The Brown and Gold clung to a 16-13 lead just past the midway point of the set, when a Queens' service error gave the Panthers the serve, which they would never relinquish, ripping off nine straight points on Crook's efforts to close out the match with a 25-13 win.
Adelphi returns to the court on Saturday, October 15 when they welcome in Northeast-10 Conference opponent American International College to Garden City for a 1:00 pm contest.
Notes:
-
Melissa Rigo's seven service aces are two off the Adelphi single game mark, which is owned by Brittany Addeo (10/9/07 - vs. NYIT) and Heather Mau (twice - 2007).
- Adelphi had 16 service aces in the match, but was well off the program single match record of 25, set against UDC (10/16) in 1993.
- The Panthers are currently 3-0 at home this season and have not lost a regular season home game since November 4, 2014 (Bridgeport, 3-0).
