Men's Basketball Prevails In Double Overtime, 102-93, At Merrimack

North Andover, Mass. - Two extra periods helped the Adelphi University men's basketball team come away with a 102-93 victory at Merrimack earlier this afternoon in Northeast-10 Conference action.

The Brown and Gold (16-4, 8-4 NE-10) outscored the Warriors 15-6 in the second overtime session to help earn the nine-point victory, which included a 12-3 run to end the game after the score was tied at 90. During that stretch, Adelphi went 7-for-8 from the free throw line while Michael Coffey hit two three-pointers in the final five minutes. Conor McGuinness had a chance to win the game for the Panthers in the first overtime after the Warriors missed a second free throw; however, the opportunity fell short and led to the extra minutes.

Playing a total of 46 minutes on the afternoon, Anthony Libroia registered a triple-double of 23 points, 12 assists and 11 rebounds that included seven assists in the first half. Meanwhile, Jack Laffey led all scorers with 25 points behind seven three-pointers. Libroia and Laffey led the entire starting five that scored in double figures, as Manny Suarez posted a double-double of 19 points and 13 rebounds, Coffey scored 16 points and Tavon Ginyard added 13.

For the Warriors (10-9, 5-8 NE-10), six players scored in double-digits with JT Strickland registering 19 points and eight rebounds while Ryan Boutler came off the bench for 18 points. Gelvis Solano recorded a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Adelphi ended the first half on a 10-0 run, which was capped off by a three-pointer from Laffey, to erase an eight point deficit and lead 46-44 at the break. The shot from Laffey was one of five converted from beyond the arc for the freshman, as he posted 15 points in the half. Coffey added 10 points in the opening 20 minutes as the Brown and Gold shot 16-for-29 (55.2 percent) from the field while Strickland totaled 10 points for Merrimack.

Both teams managed to build five-point leads in the second half before back-to-back three-pointers from Ginyard and Suarez gave Adelphi an 82-80 lead with 1:21 left. Less than 20 seconds later, Troy Hammel tied the score for the Warriors, and each team missed a potential game-winning layup in the final minute to force the overtime periods. Libroia and Coffey each scored six points in the overtime periods to help lead Adelphi to victory while the team did not commit a turnover.

The Panthers remain on the road for Tuesday's contest at Saint Anselm in Manchester, N.H. to face the Hawks at 7:30 pm.
