Garden City, N.Y. -- In a low-scoring affair inside the Center for Recreation and Sport on Wednesday night, the Adelphi University women's basketball team saw its three-game winning streak at the hands of the visiting Stonehill College Skyhawks, 56-49.
Three Panthers scored in double figures in the setback, led by 16 from
Sierra Clark on 7-13 shooting from the floor; in addition,
Ashley Gomez scored 12 points while
Samantha Brenner added 10 to account for the bulk of Adelphi's scoring on the night. Kelly Martin scored a game-high 18 points for the Skyhawks (9-9, 4-8 NE-10).
Plagued by turnovers in the contest, Adelphi (13-6, 6-5 NE-10) racked up 21 over the course of the game to just 15 for the Skyhawks. Adelphi saw its 14-11 advantage at the end of the first quarter -- as Clark scored the final six of the period -- evaporate in the second, as Stonehill nearly doubled up Adelphi's points (17-9) to take a 28-23 lead at halftime.
With Stonehill leading by six, 37-31, at the midway point of the third quarter, Adelphi rallied for the final seven points of the period as
Calli Balfour and
Tara Flynn put in two-point buckets and Gomez knocked down a three-pointer off a dish from
Julia Gnieser to put Adelphi back in the lead, 38-37, as the game headed to the final 10 minutes.
Clark hit a pair of free throws from the line to open up a 40-37 lead for the Brown and Gold to open the fourth, but after Martin drained a triple with 7:33 to go to knot the score at 40-40, the Panthers never led again in the contest. The two teams went bucket for bucket in the ensuing minutes, but Stonehill scored six straight to take a 50-44 lead with 3:37 to play. On the ensuing trip up the floor,
Lauren Nuss sank a three from the right side to make it a one possession game at 50-47, but the Skyhawks sealed the victory by scoring six of the final eight points.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 23 when they travel to North Andover, Mass. to take on the Warriors of Merrimack College at 1:30 pm.
