Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team secured its first Northeast-10 Conference win of the 2015-16 season on Wednesday afternoon by shutting out the Yellow Jackets of American International College, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Panthers picked up two wins without taking the court as
Bianca Bernal and
Karen Serina (No. 3 doubles) and Bernal (No. 6 singles) did not have opponents to face. In the two doubles matches that took the court, the Panthers were dominant; newcomers
Elizabeth Kallenberg and
Samantha Perri scored an 8-2 win at No. 1, while
Rebecca Fakas and
Elena Nastasi dropped just one game in an 8-1 win at No. 2.
With the two default wins in their pocket, the Panthers only needed to complete two singles matches to secure the win. Perri picked up her second win on the day by recording a double bagel at No. 4, and
Maria Bruzon Gutierrez put the finishing touches on the win with a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 5. The Panthers were leading at two of the other three flights when play was called.
"It was a nice win today in a match that was closer than it showed on paper," head coach
Michael Misiti said. "We need to keep working well together as we are going into a tough weekend of tennis."
