Syracuse, NY – For the second straight season, an overtime winner was the key to the Northeast-10 Conference Championship for the Adelphi University men's lacrosse team earlier today as
Connor Duddy gave the Panthers a 12-11 victory at Le Moyne.
Tied at 11 entering the overtime period, both teams had their opportunities to end the game with a sudden death goal. However, after
DJ Mauro's second save of the session,
Nick Susko found Duddy with 21 seconds remaining to give the Brown and Gold a second straight NE-10 Championship crown.
Salvatore Tuttle finished with a game-high five points on five goals with five others adding two points each.
John English finished 14-for-25 from the faceoff circle towards six groundballs.
Ralph Faiella caused two turnovers and picked up five groundballs.
Tuttle scored all three goals for the Panthers in the opening period, including the game's first a little more than three minutes in. The Dolphins put together two separate 2-0 runs in the quarter, with Joe Corapi netting a strike in each spurt. Tuttle cut the 4-2 deficit to 4-3 for the Brown and Gold with 10 seconds left on his third of the game.
The goal from Tuttle to end the quarter helped start a 4-0 run that carried into the second period.
Jamie McAndrew,
Tim Daly, and Duddy all scored within the first two minutes of the second quarter to give Adelphi a 6-4 run. Another 2-0 run from Le Moyne, including Corapi's third, tied the score again at 6-6. Another quick response though from Daly afforded Adelphi a 7-6 advantage. After Matt Taylor tied the game for Le Moyne with a minute left, Tuttle again struck before time expired to give Adelphi a 8-7 lead with three seconds left and go into halftime with the advantage.
At the break, the Brown and Gold held a slight 20-19 lead in shots while also going 10-for-16 from the faceoff circle. Tuttle scored his goals on eight shots while Daly added his two on three attempts.
The Panthers needed just two goals in the third period to take a 10-7 lead after three periods as the defense held the Dolphins scoreless in the quarter. McAndrew scored the first just a little more than 90 seconds into the half while Tuttle capped off the two-goal period with 7:42 remaining.
After being shutout in the fourth, the Dolphins scored four unanswered to start the fourth quarter as Chris Breiner scored the final two and gave Le Moyne an 11-10 win. However, off a caused turnover from
Jack Cutrone,
Cory Stavis found
Nick Susko to even the score again at 11-11 to send the game to overtime.
Both teams now await tonight's 7:30 pm
NCAA Selection Show as the Tournament Field will be revealed.
