Garden City, N.Y. - Behind a balanced offensive attack, the Adelphi University women's lacrosse team advanced to the program's sixth consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Championship game with a 14-5 win against the fourth-seeded Stonehill College Skyhawks on Saturday afternoon on Motamed Field.
Adelphi (17-1) saw five players score two or more goals in the victory, led by a four-goal performance by
Alexa Froccaro.
Jacqueline Jahelka tallied a game high-five points (3G, 2A), while
Danielle Jaycox,
Rachel O'Brien and
Felicia Mills all tallied two goals for the Panthers.
Lauren Janelli,
Kaitlyn Stackpole and
Ryley Weber all caused two turnovers for the Panthers, while Weber won eight of Adelphi's 13 draw controls. On defense, Stonehill (15-4) got two goals from freshman Elizabeth Vetter in the loss, while keeper Ashley Armstrong made nine saves.
It was the visiting Skyhawks who got on the board first just 41 seconds into the contest when Jillian Yung beat
Taylor Hayes in the Adelphi net for her 18th goal of the season to give the Purple and White a 1-0 lead. That would be the last time Adelphi trailed, however, as three consecutive scores by Froccaro, Jaycox and O'Brien turned the one-goal deficit into a 3-1 lead.
Vetter took advantage of a man-up opportunity for Stonehill with
Ryley Weber on the sidelines to pull the Skyhawks within a goal, 3-2 with 16:50 left in the first half. The game stayed a one-goal affair for nearly five minutes, before Jahelka went back-to-back with unassisted goals to increase the Brown and Gold's lead to 5-2. A Lizzie Lane goal momentarily stemmed the Adelphi tide with 7:35 to go, but the Panthers scored three more times behind Froccaro,
Kate Beier and O'Brien to close out the half with an 8-3 advantage.
Mills took a pass from
Emily Keesling into the back of the net to open the second half, but the Skyhawks battled on defense before scoring two goals of their own in a row to close the gap to 9-5 with 18:12 to play. More opportunities to score allowed the Panthers to pull away with the last five goals of the contest, as they out-shot the Skyhawks 31-10 over the course of the game and consistently kept pressure on Armstrong. Over the last 15 minutes of the game, goals from Jahelka, Mills, Jaycox and two finishers from Froccaro put the finishing touches on the win to move Adelphi into the championship.
The Panthers will host the winner of today's second semifinal between Le Moyne and New Haven tomorrow, May 2, on Motamed Field at 1 pm.
