Manchester, NH – Another extra inning affair started the weekend for the second straight week for the Adelphi University softball team in NCAA Tournament play as the Panthers claimed game one, 5-3 of a best of three-game Super Regional series against host Southern New Hampshire.
Tied at 3-3 in the 15th inning,
Brenna Martini looped a double to the right field line to score
Jordan Catalano and put the Panthers ahead.
Martini led the offense with a 5-for-6 day while
Jaclyn Binstock and
Jordan Catalano each added homeruns. In the circle,
Lindsay Mapes pitched the first 13.0 innings with two strikeouts while
Jasmine Ennabe came on for the win by tossing two shutout innings in relief.
After three innings without a hit to start the game for the Panther offense, Catalano gave the Brown and Gold their first hit and first run of the game with a leadoff homerun to left field for a 1-0 advantage in the fourth. However, the Penmen quickly responded in the next half to take the lead on a three-run homerun from Holly Eicher. The inning was set up with back-to-back singles from Katie Caruso and Lindsey Bolduc.
With Catalano's homerun the only hit for Adelphi through six innings, the Panthers looked to rally in the seventh as Martini got on board with a one out single. After a lengthy, 13-pitch at-bat, Binstock tied the game at 3-3 with a homerun that cleared the left field fence to help force extra innings.
After a full seven innings of scoreless, extra softball, the Panthers were able to break through in the 15th inning with Martini driving in the winning run after Catalano led the inning off with a walk and
Victoria Wink was hit by a pitch. Binstock added the insurance with a single to left center to drive in Wink. Ennabe ended the game with a 1-2-3 bottom of the 15th inning with all three outs going to
Danielle Cutuli at second base.
The two teams return tomorrow afternoon for game two of this best of three-game series at 2:00 pm back on the campus of Southern New Hampshire.
