Saint Rose Takes Weekend Opener 7-2 Against Baseball

Garden City, NY - Five unanswered runs from Saint Rose led to a 7-2 victory for the visitors against the Adelphi University baseball team earlier today to start a three-game Northeast-10 Conference Southwest Divsional series earlier today.

Donato Signore picked up three hits and a run scored from his leadoff postion for the Panthers (17-18/10-10 NE-10/8-8 SW). Kory Cassara and Robert Vani each notched two hits with Vani adding a RBI.

Joseph Carcone and Zac Bellinger recorded three hits each with Bellinger driving in three runs. Derek Reed scored two runs and drove in two with a couple of hits on the afternoon. Ryan Harper earned the victory on the mound for the Golden Knights (11-22/6-12 NE-10/5-11 SW) by going the distance by scattering 10 hits and striking out five. The senior also did not walk a batter to help his cause.

The Brown and Gold scored the game's first in run in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly from Michael Stack to score Eric Hassell after Hassell led off the inning with a single. Saint Rose quickly repsonded in the top of the third as Reed hit a two-run homerun to left center and grab a 2-1 lead. However, Adelphi was up for a quick response as well in the bottom half as Vani singled up the middle with one out to score Signore. Signore and Cassara led off the inning with back-to-back singles.

For the second consecutive inning, Saint Rose put a run on the board in the fourth with Mike Flynn picking up a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Tyler Ungerland who doubled to lead off the inning, taking the lead at 3-2. The Golden Knights added insurance runs in the fifth and ninth innings to increase the lead to 7-2 for Harper. In the fifth, Ungerland drove in Bellinger with a single before Bellinger hit a three-run homerun in the top of the ninth inning with two outs to score Reed and Joseph Carcone.

Despite giving up three hits throughout the final six innings, Harper faced the minimum in each inning by producing two double plays and getting help from his defense in the fifth by tagging out Cassara at third after the freshman tried stretching a double into a triple.

Both teams return to action tomorrow with a 12:00 pm doubleheader at Bonomo Field. The day will begin with "Senior Day" ceremony for the eight seniors on this year's baseball squad.
