Garden City, NY – The third seed Adelphi University men's lacrosse team used an 18-11 victory this evening against sixth seeded Pace in the Northeast-10 Conference Championship Quarterfinal round to move on to the Semifinal round and face second seed Merrimack.
Nick Susko followed up his NE-10 Player of the Week honor from earlier today with a seven-point performance behind four goals and three assists. Four others added two goals for the Panthers (13-2), including
Salvatore Tuttle who also posted two assists.
John English scooped up 18 ground balls thanks in large part to going 24-for-30 from the faceoff circle. As a group, the Brown and Gold made 12 saves in net.
After a tally less than a minute into the first period from Anthony Gadaleta to put Pace up 1-0, the Panthers scored six unanswered goals to take a 6-1 lead. The six goals came from six different individuals, capped off by
Paul Bentz with 2:11 left in the quarter. Matthew Cossidente added a man-up goal for Pace with 46 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 6-2 at the end of the first.
Joseph Sciara opened the second period with back-to-back strikes to kick off another 6-0 run for the Brown and Gold. Susko and Tuttle combined for three straight goals, with Susko scoring the last two after finding Tuttle for the first. The Setters yet again added the final goal before the end of the period as Christopher Brown netted his first with 3:47 left until halftime.
Leading 12-3 at the half, Adelphi also held advantages in shots, 30-13, and ground balls, 28-15. English went 15-for-17 from the faceoff circle while Pace finished the half 8-for-8 on clear attempts.
The two teams evenly split eight goals in the third period to keep the Adelphi margin at nine goals with a 16-7 lead going into the final quarter. Susko added two more goals in the period as well as an assist finding
Connor Duddy just 24 seconds into the half with a man-up tally. Down, 15-4, Pace rallied for three straight scores before Susko added his second of the period with 17 seconds left.
Pace outscored Adelphi 4-2 in the fourth, however, a man-up goal from Peter Sharp only cut the deficit to 18-11 with 1:42 remaining in the period. Both teams went scoreless in the final moments to finish with that score.
Advancing in the NE-10 Championship bracket, the Panthers travel to North Andover, MA this Friday for a 4:00 pm semifinal game at rival Merrimack. The Warriors won the regular season contest back on Saturday, March 21 with a 13-12 overtime decision on Motamed Field.
