Manchester, NH – Host Saint Anselm claimed both ends of today's cross-divisional Northeast-10 Conference doubleheader, 5-3 and 4-3, against the Adelphi University baseball team this afternoon.
Vincent Sharkey and
Robert Vani each tallied three hits on the day for the Panthers (10-13/7-6 NE-10) while
Nick Zito drove in two runs.
Nikolas Batas pitched in both games, tossing 2.2 shutout innings with two strikeouts.
The Brown and Gold did not have to produce a hit in inning one of the opener to take a 1-0 lead on a Zito sacrifice fly to left field. Sharkey scored the run after walking to leadoff the game. The Hawks (9-15/6-5 NE-10) quickly responded in the bottom half with three runs, highlighted by a two-run homerun from Joe Morin.
Saint Anselm added two more needed insurance runs in the bottom of the third as the Panthers looked to chip away at the 5-1 deficit in the fourth and sixth innings. Vani led off the fourth a double to right center and later scored on a
Donato Signore single. Zito once again scored Sharkey in the sixth to make the Hawk advantage 5-3.
However, Dave Kent did not allow further Panther runs, going the distance for the complete game victory behind six strikeouts and just two earned runs.
John Thompson combined with Batas for 5.2 innings of shutout relief work with four strikeouts.
In the finale, Signore tripled to lead off the second inning and later scored from third on an error during
Eric Hassell's at-bat. Saint Anselm again was up for a quick response Max Wadington laid down a sacrifice bunt to score John Marculitis from third.
Adelphi took a 3-1 lead midway through the fifth after a
Tyler Murphy RBI double in the fourth and a Vani solo homerun in the fifth. The long ball again was the key to a rally for Saint Anselm in the bottom of the fifth as Ken Morrisino hit a three-run blast to put the hosts up for good at 4-3.
The Panthers are back on the road this Tuesday with a 3:30 pm divisional contest at Southern Connecticut State.
