Barry Closes Out 12-7 Win Against Baseball

The host Buccaneers scored seven runs after the Panthers fought back to the game at 5-5.

Miami Shores, FL – After the Adelphi baseball team tied the score at five in the top of the second inning, Barry University scored seven runs from the sixth through eighth innings to earn a 12-7 victory earlier this evening.

Nick Zito finished 3-for-5 for the Panthers (1-5) with a run scored and a RBI while Robert Vani added two hits, including a double, as well as a run and RBI. Three individuals also each drew two walks.

Ryan Baldwin and Kyle Pangallo each recorded two hits and three RBI for the Buccaneers (13-10). Jonathan Hernandez came on to throw five relief innings that included no runs surrendered and five strikeouts.

The host Buccaneers pushed across five runs in the bottom of the first inning to take an early advantage. Barry recorded only two hits to score the runs as the lineup was helped by three walks, two sacrifice flies, and a fielding error.

Adelphi did not trail for long though, scoring five runs in the top of the second inning. Eric Hassell and Donato Signore scored the first two runs after leading off the inning with back-to-back walks followed by Kory Cassara driving in the next run with a RBI single to right field. John Fogarty scored the fourth run on the fielder's choice followed by Vincent Sharkey touching home on a failed pickoff attempt.

John Thompson held down the Barry offense from the second through the fifth with four shutout innings on the mound that included six strikeouts. He also produced four ground outs that included a 4-6-3 double play in the fourth after a leadoff single.

The Buccaneers recovered the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning after Jake Jacobs reached on an error, despite the effort from Vani, and Khalil Denson drove him in with a single to left center. Barry added five more in the seventh that included a two-run homerun from Baldwin to take an 11-5 advantage.  Pangallo added a RBI double in the eighth for the 12th run.

The Brown and Gold cut into the deficit in the ninth with two runs as Vani drove in Zito with a RBI double and Kyle Collins followed up two batters later with a RBI single. Barry got the final two outs with a pop out and a groundout to secure the victory.

The Panthers return to Barry University at 1:00 pm on Sunday to face Northeast-10 Conference rival Southern Connecticut State.
