Manchester, N.H. - The Adelphi University men's lacrosse team used a nine-goal first quarter to propel themselves to a 16-6 Northeast-10 Conference victory over the Hawks of Saint Anselm College on Saturday afternoon.
Adelphi (5-0, 3-0 NE-10) was helped by two goals apiece from
Tim Daly, Chris Racalbuto,
Joseph Sciara and
Jamie McAndrew, while eight other members of the Brown and Gold assisted in the scoring. James Peters scored a game-high three goals for Saint Anselm (0-3, 0-1 NE-10).
The Panthers got on the board just 1:10 into the contest as McAndrew took a pass from
Cory Stavis into the back of the net, and doubled their lead when
Luke Spitzer scored one unassisted
just 15 seconds later. After the hosts got one back, the Panthers scored seven of the next eight goals of the frame to put themselves ahead, 9-2 at the end of the first quarter. The Hawks defense did its part in the second quarter, holding the Panthers to just six shots total, while its offense scored the only goal of the quarter to cut the Adelphi lead to 9-3 at halftime.
In the second half, Adelphi closed out the third quarter with a 5-1 advantage in goals scored as Salvatore Tuttle picked up two assists. In the final period, all four goals were unassisted scores as both the Hawks and the Panthers netted two, leading to a 16-6 Adelphi victory. Adelphi won the statistical battle, out-shooting the hosts 48 to 32 over the course of the game. The Panthers picked up more ground balls (33 to 23), commited less turnovers (16 to 19) and
John English won 19 of the 25 faceoffs that he contested.
John McGrath picked up the win in goal for Adelphi, making five saves on the eight shots he faced, while
DJ Mauro picked up four saves in the second half.
The Panthers return to action next Saturday, March 21, when they host the Warriors of Merrimack College in a 1 p.m. contest in a rematch of last year's Northeast-10 Championship game.
