West Haven, Conn. – In their final regular season Northeast-10 contest, the No. 10 Adelphi University women's basketball team had a 36-35 lead going into the half over No. 21 University of New Haven. The Panthers captured the Southwest regular season Champions title with a 76-73 decision at Charger Gymnasium, Tuesday evening.
Adelphi (25-3, 18-2 NE-10) was led offensively by
Kelly Mannix who captured her eleventh double-double this season with 22 points and 11 rebounds. Also in double-figures was
Anh-Dao Tran and
Ashley Gomez, who contributed 12 and 11, respectively. For the Chargers (22-4, 16-4 NE-10) Aquillan Hayes scored a team-high 22 points and pulled down 13 boards. Briana Badford and Lauren Herbert combined for 27 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
Nearly a minute passed until either team got on the scoreboard, as the home team was first to strike on a Hayes jumper. Several missed shots and turnovers later, Halaby laid a ball in tp tie the game at two apiece. After five minutes of play, the teams were locked at seven after Tran drained a three-pointer. Adelphi took their first lead of the half on a Brenner layup an opportunity later.
The Brown and Gold started pulling away with fewer than 10 to play with a 9-2 run but the home team was not satisfied. Before the first half expired, Hayes, Sade King and Bria Moore combined to bring the Chargers within one at the half.
In the second half alone, Adelphi shot 5-8 from three point range and maintained the lead until a layup by Herbert swung momentum in favor of the home team, 55-54. Adelphi regained the lead with seven minutes left in regulation on a
Lauren Nuss shot from downtown. The Chargers tied the game once more on back-to-back free throws from Hayes, but were unable to hold back the Panthers. Mannix nailed a three-pointer with 3:08 left on the clock and foul trouble for New Haven sent
Calli Balfour and Gomez to the line to finish 4-4 in the final two minutes.
With the 76-73 victory, the Panthers earn the Southwest Division Regular Season title for the second season in a row. With the No. 1 seed, they earn a first round bye and will host the winner of #4 NE/#5 SW (matchups still pending) on Sunday, March 2 at 3 p.m. in the Center for Recreation and Sports on the campus of Adelphi University.
