Women's Basketball Soars Past the Owls, 77-62

Four Panthers net double figures in win.

New Haven, Conn. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team got back to its winning ways on the road on Saturday afternoon, as four players scored in double figures to knock off the Owls of Southern Connecticut University, 77-62, in a Northeast-10 Conference contest.

A balanced offense was the key to the Panthers' (22-3, 15-2 NE-10) success on the day. Anh-Dao Tran netted a team-high 15 points, while Kelly Mannix and Janté Bracewell both tallied double-doubles. Mannix posted 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, while Bracewell finished off a career day with 12 points and 13 rebounds.  Calli Balfour chipped in 12, while Ashley Gomez and Tara Flynn each added nine. The Owls (13-11, 10-6 NE-10) also had two players record double doubles, as Jackie Beathea and Sydni Lester accomplished the feat.

After falling behind 8-0 to start the contest, Adelphi unleashed a 19-2 scoring run where Mannix and Balfour combined for 17 points, and took a 19-10 lead with 12:39 to play. The two squads traded quick points on the ensuing possessions until a Jenna Halaby layup at 10:33 pushed the Panthers' lead into double figures, 25-14.

Tallying just two points off the hand of Mannix in the ensuing five minutes, the Brown and Gold offense went cold over as the home team netted five points in an attempt to make up some ground. A Nicole Grossbard three at 5:33 pulled the Owls within five, 27-22, but the hosts would get no closer than that for the duration of the half. A combined 10 points by Flynn and Bracewell off the bench down the stretch held off the Southern Connecticut challenge and put the Panthers in the locker room leading, 39-31.

A Jackie Beathea layup cut Adelphi's lead to 41-37 less than two minutes into the second half, but the home team struggled to get much closer for the duration. A Bracewell layup and a Flynn trey restored the eight-point lead, and while the Owls continued to challenge, a Lauren Nuss layup put Adelphi up 10, 57-47, with 11:30 remaining.

The Panthers' lead stayed at or near double digits for much of the second half from that point, as they answered every Owl basket with one of their own. After being fouled three down the stretch, Tran sunk five of six from the line to give Adelphi its largest lead and the Brown and Gold wrapped up the 15-point victory moments later.

The Panthers return to action on Wednesday, February 18 when they host the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose in a 5:30 pm contest and celebrate Senior Day.
