Garden City, NY – The Adelphi University returned from six days off from competition to start a streak of three games in five days with a 76-70 win in Northeast-10 Conference action against visiting American International earlier this evening.
Cali Balfour paced the Adelphi (21-2/14-2 NE-10) attack with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds to go along with three steals, a block, and an assist.
Anh-Dao Tran notched 19 points and five assists while
Kelly Mannix finished with 12 points, five assists and three steals.
Krista Ferrentino led all scorers with 25 points for the Yellow Jackets (13-12/8-9 NE-10) to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Briana Bishop poured in 16 points while coming up with two steals.
The Yellow Jackets responded from being down 16-4 early in the first half to rally and even the scoreboard at 24 on the heels of a jumper from KFerrentino with 4:48 remaining in the first half. Back-to-back 3-pointers from Mannix and Tran quickly put the Panthers back up by six and help go into the locker room break with a 36-29 advantage.
Seven players figured into the scoring column for Adelphi in the first half as
Jenna Halaby led all with nine points. Balfour added eight points and six rebounds to the effort while Bishop posted a first half high 11 points that included three made from beyond the arc for American International.
Alyssa Roach was able to cut the lead down to two points for the Yellow Jackets at 59-57 before Balfour knocked another from beyond the arc to put the Panthers up 62-57 with less than six minutes remaining. American International was able to cut the margin to two points a few more times before Balfour once again put the Brown and Gold up five points with a layup and a free throw at 71-66 with 1:25 left.
Adelphi closed out the final minute of regulation with Tran and Balfour knocking down a pair of free throws to help secure the 76-70 win.
The Panthers are on the road this Thursday for a non-conference game at league opponent Franklin Pierce starting at 5:30 pm.
