Second Half Scoring Leads AIC Past Men's Basketball, 78-64

Panthers commit 21 turnovers in loss.

Garden City, N.Y. - Turnovers were the story for the Adelphi University men's basketball team against American International College on Tuesday night, as the Panthers committed 21 in total to help the Yellow Jackets come away with a 78-64 win in the Center for Recreation and Sports.

Adelphi (4-18, 1-15 NE-10) saw three of its starters score in double figures, as Duane Morgan led the Panthers with 18 points. Anthony Libroia added 14 while Justin Jenkins totaled 12. Morgan also totaled a double-double as he pulled down 12 boards, and Ryan DeNicola pulled down a team-high 13. Cameron Dobbs scored a game-high 29 for the Yellow Jackets (17-5, 12-4 NE-10), behind seven three-pointers.

Behind a trey from DeNicola, Adelphi opened up an early 5-2 lead that was quickly erased by the visitors. The Yellow Jackets scored the next 11 points unanswered to take a 13-5 lead at the 14:12 mark, before Adelphi hit back for a 7-0 run of its own to pull the deficit to one, 13-12. After reclaiming the lead minutes later, the Brown and Gold advantage expanded to six and Jenkins drained a three from behind the arc.

The score would tie two more times before a Coleman three pushed Adelphi ahead, 31-28, with 2:05 to play. However, the Yellow Jackets scored the final five points of the half to head into the locker room up two, 33-31.

The visitors' lead expanded to six behind a layup from Trahmier Burrell at 16:32, before Morgan, DeNicola and Jenkins combined for points to knot the action at 43-43 with 13:55 to play and force a Yellow Jacket timeout. The Panther comeback to that point was short lived, however, as an 18-4 run over the next five minutes of action saw the visitors' lead balloon to 61-47 with under nine to go.

A quick 4-0 spurt brought the Brown and Gold to within 10, but Adelphi turnovers and hot shooting from the Yellow Jackets sealed the Panthers' fate. The Yellow Jackets outscored the Panthers 27-13 in the last seven minutes to close out the game and leave Garden City with the win.
