Garden City, N.Y. -- The Adelphi University volleyball team completed its perfect Northeast-10 Conference regular season record with a 3-0 (25-20, 25-18, 25-19) sweep of the visiting Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday afternoon. Prior to the match, the team honored its two graduating seniors --
Shelby Stoner and
Ajsha Mekulovic -- each of whom played a part in the three-set victory.
Freshman
McKenna Clawson led the Adelphi (23-4, 14-0 NE-10) attack on Senior Day, hammering down 12 kills while Stoner also hit double figures with 11. The senior middle blocker also had a hand in five blocks on the afternoon -- second to
Madison Canestrari's team-high seven.
Megan Manierski piloted the offense with 33 assists, while
Sierra Crook racked up 23 digs as Mekulovic and Manierski recorded 10.
An early lead for the Panthers turned into a 15-15 tie as the visitors ran off four straight points midway through to equal the opening set. From that point, however, the Panthers doubled up the Penmen in scoring -- 10-5 -- to close out the set, as Stoner put down three kills and teamed with Manierski for a block to anchor the Brown and Gold over that stretch.
Adelphi started the second set strongly, opening up a 6-1 lead that forced SNHU to use an early timeout. Undaunted, the visitors ripped off six of the next seven points to tie the action at 7-7 before a service error handed momentum back to the Panthers, kicking off a 6-2 run that gave them a 13-9 lead. The Penmen kept the score close for the duration but a four point spurt turned a 19-15 game into a 22-15 contest, and Adelphi hung on for the 25-18 set.
The Penmen broke out to a 7-3 lead in the third set, and held that lead until 13-10 -- when a 5-0 run by the Brown and Gold gave them the lead. Both team challenged for the advantage, and SNHU held two more leads in the later stages. From an 18-18 tie, however, Adelphi took seven of the final eight points to wrap up the 3-0 victory.
As the top seeds, the Panthers will host the quarterfinal round of the NE-10 tournament against an opponent to be determined on Tuesday, November 17.
