Flushing, N.Y. – A close victory for the Adelphi University men's basketball helped move the team to 2-0 on the early season with a 79-74 victory at Queens College tonight during the second day of the ECC/NE-10 Challenge.
Sophomore
Michael Coffey knocked down four 3-pointers towards a team-high 17 points while
Ryan DeNicola totaled 12 points and eight rebounds along with
Anthony Libroia adding 10 points, five rebounds, and a like numbers of assists.
Manny Suarez contributed 11 points, seven rebounds and three blocks from his starting center position while Conor McGuiness came off the bench to register 15 points that included three 3-pointers.
Tyree White posted game-highs of 19 points and 13 rebounds along with three assists for the host Knights. Diego Maldonado scored 12 points from the starting backcourt as well with Paul Little adding 11 points and four rebounds in reserve duty.
The Brown and Gold controlled the lead for the majority of the first half before Queens took a 37-35 lead with 1:41 left in the period on the back of a Little 3-pointer. After a jumper by Simon Green to push the lead to 39-35 lead for the Knights, Libroia knocked down two free throws to cut the deficit to 39-37 going into halftime.
Libroia led the Panthers with 10 points in the half while White and Maldonado matched his effort for Queens. White also added seven rebounds as the host held a slight 16-14 advantage in the column for the half.
A 3-pointer by Coffey 22 seconds into the final 20 minutes gave Adelphi the lead for good at 40-39 as the Panthers were able to hold several runs by the Knights. Helping the margin were two separate eight-point leads that were created by two layups from Coffey.
With Malaondao cutting the lead to three with seven seconds left at 77-74, McGuiness was able to push the lead to 79-74 with back-to-back free throws with five seconds remaining. A jumper from Green bounced off with two seconds left, going to the Panthers out of bounds to secure the victory.
The Brown and Gold mark the regular season home-opener this Wednesday with a 7:30 pm Northeast-10 Conference opener against Southern Connecticut State.
