Men's Soccer Falls In Overtime 4-3 To Wilmington In First Round Of NCAA Tournament

Brookville, N.Y. - A goal 30 seconds into the first overtime period lifted Wilmington to the Second Round of the NCAA Tournament with a 4-3 decision against the Adelphi University men's soccer team during East Region First Round action today at LIU Post.

Jamie Burridge scored the game-winner for the Wildcats in the 91st minute of action, sprinting in to clean up a loose ball off an initial rebound in the box. The victory moves Wilmington into the Second Round of the tournament to face the host Pioneers on Saturday at 1:00 pm.

The Wildcats scored the lone goal of the first half in the 24th minute. Lance Berry crossed in a serve from the right side into the middle of the box that Clifford Nwechefom was able to head into the inside of the right post.

Both teams finished the first half with five shots apiece with Wilmington creating the lone corner kick. Tasca made three saves to keep Adelphi off the board while Spenser Powell made one stop in his 45 minutes of action.

Quickly into the second half, the Brown and Gold evened the score at 1-1 in teh 52nd minute with their own header. Emil Thomsen placed his header shot inside the right post as John Stojcevski crossed his assist into the box. Just as quickly as the Panthers tied the score, the Wildcats took back the lead as Berry followed up his assist with a goal in the 56th minute by putting in a loose ball.

The high action continued as Wesley Bosse tied the score again for the Panthers at 2-2 in the 64th minute, tapping in a cross from the left flank from Toni Soler. Adelphi then grabbed its first lead of the game in teh 72nd minute as Caelan Hueber collected a cross off his chest from Federico De Oliveira to volley in the 3-2 lead. However, Berry once again pushed the Wildcats into action by collecting a loose ball in the box during the 77th minute and convereted the equalizer inside the far right post.

Playing the final 13 minutes even, both teams went into the overtime session with 11 shots each while Adelphi created four corner kicks compared to two for the Wildcats in the second half.

With the ball in the overtime period, a quick run allowed Burridge to find the back of the net and lift Wilmington into the next round just 30 seconds into extra time.
