Albany, N.Y. -- Hampered by two injury retirements, the Adelphi University women's tennis team was forced to dig deep to see off the Golden Knights of the College of Saint Rose on Wednesday afternoon, remaining perfect on the season with a 5-4 win.
In a shuffled doubles lineup, the Panthers (11-0, 10-0 NE-10) took two of the three points, led by an 8-4 victory by
Elizabeth Kallenberg and
Samantha Perri at No. 1.
Karen Serina and
Rebecca Fakas followed with a dominant 8-0 win at No. 2 doubles, but the Panthers were denied the sweep as
Maria Malafronte and KeriAnn Mahoney edged Bianca Bernal and Maria Bruzon Gutierrez at No. 3, 9-7.With both Lineva and Kallenberg forced to retire due to injuries at No. 1 and No. 2, it was up to the middle of the Adelphi lineup to carry the Panthers to victory. They rose to the challenge, however, as Fakas, Perri and Nastasi combined to drop just three games in six sets to wrap up the win. A 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 4 for Perri was her third straight double bagel victory -- and sixth overall this season -- as she's won the last 36 games she's played in singles.
"Today's match was tough physically but it was a good win for the women's team," said assistant coach
Joanna Haich. "We have a few days to recover and get back into shape for our upcoming matches. We look forward to playing
on Saturday and
Monday."
