Hempstead Lake, N.Y. -- In a match pushed indoors due to weather, the Adelphi University women's tennis team put its eight-match winning streak on the line against the Assumption College Greyhounds, winners of six straight, on Saturday afternoon.
A sweep of the doubles gave Adelphi (9-0, 8-0 NE-10) the 3-0 lead in the match, as all two of the three matches were closely contested. Although
Elizabeth Kallenberg and
Samantha Perri dropped just three games en route to winning at No. 2, the teams of
Stefani Lineva and
Karen Serina (No. 1) and
Rebecca Fakas and
Elena Nastasi (No. 3) edged their opponents by respective 8-6 and 8-5 scores.
Perri led the Panthers on court in singles play, defeating Maggie Holland 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles, before Fakas and Kallenberg followed suit with two-set wins to clinch the afternoon's victory. Assumption's two points came at No. 1 and No. 6 singles, as both Lineva and Nastasi fell to their opponents in match tiebreaks.
"We are very pleased with our win indoors today," said assistant coach
Joanna Haich. "The team played very well against Assumption who has also gone undefeated in the NE-10 this season. We look forward to tomorrow's match against Saint Anselm College."
