Garden City, N.Y. -- Needing just nine digs to pass Amy Williams ('10) for No. 1 on the program's all-time digs list, junior libero
Sierra Crook racked up 17 on Tuesday night to anchor the Adelphi University volleyball team's defense in a 3-1 (25-21, 29-27, 18-25, 28-26) win over the visiting Pace University Setters.
Shelby Stoner and
McKenna Clawson led the Brown and Gold with 17 kills apiece, while
Mandy Stanislovaitis added 13 kills to round out the trio in double figures.
Megan Manierski ran the offense to the tune of 47 set assists, and also chipped in a team-high five blocks, while Crook, Clawson (19) and Stanislovaitis (12) chipped in two-figure digs. Crook now stands at 1,371 digs for her career.
The Setters (9-13, 1-3 NE-10) got off to a strong start, taking a 6-2 lead in the first set. However, an 11-4 scoring run for the Panthers (14-4, 5-0 NE-10), capped when Stoner and Stanislovaitis blocked back an Alyssa Marchino offering allowed them to lead 13-10. The Setters would rally, however, knotting the set five times and for the final time at 21-21. Two kills from Manierski and a final hammer from Clawson punctuated the 25-21 set, and gave Adelphi a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set was all Adelphi at the start, as they took an early 9-3 lead on a Stoner kill and led 17-13 late on a Stanislovaitis finish. However, the Setters rallied for four points in a row to knot the action, and although Adelphi later took a 24-20 lead on a successfully executed block from
Madison Canestrari and
Bailey Riedel, the Setters rallied to even things at 24, 25, 26 and 27 to force a lengthy second set. However, a Setter service error opened the door one final time and Stanislovaitis stepped through it, hammering home a kill to give Adelphi the 2-0 match lead.
Although Adelphi won the first two points of the third frame, the Setters took the lead shortly after and hardly relinquished it for the duration. Although Adelphi evened things at 16-16 on a Setter error and 17-17 on a Clawson kill, the visitors claimed eight of the final nine points to wrap up the 25-18 set and send it to a fourth.
A 9-4 run to start the set put the Panthers in command of the fourth, and they led by as much as 19-13 looking to close out the match. However, a 10-1 streak for the Setters quickly put them ahead 23-20 as they sought to force a fifth. Again forced to extra points, the Panthers wrapped things up with three kills from Clawson and Stoner to take the 3-1 match win.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, October 17 when they travel to Sprinfield, Mass. for a 1 pm NE-10 meeting with the AIC Yellow Jackets.
