Perri Leads Women's Tennis to NE-10 Regular Season Crown with 5-4 Win Over Stonehill

Easton, Mass. -- With the match deadlocked at 4-4, freshman Samantha Perri recorded a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No. 5 singles to lead the Adelphi University women's tennis team past the Stonehill College Skyhawks, 5-4, to clinch Adelphi's second straight Northeast-10 Conference regular season title on Monday afternoon.

With the Panthers putting their undefeated record on the line against last year's tournament champions, the Brown and Gold (13-0, 12-0 NE-10) gained a foothold in the match by sweeping doubles play. A pair of 8-5 victories went to Stefani Lineva and Karen Serina (No. 1) and Rebecca Fakas and Elena Nastasi (No. 3) while Elizabeth Kallenberg and Perri chipped in an 8-4 win at No. 2.

However, the host Skyhawks (10-3, 9-2 NE-10) were not going to go quietly, raising the level of play to take three singles wins in straight sets and benefitting from a Lineva retirement at top flight. However, the Panthers benefitted from a retirement of their own after Kirsti Toegemann conceded to Kallenberg at No, 2 after just three games to set the stage for Perri. The freshman, who has yet to lose a match across singles and doubles this season, duly delivered to clinch the match and regular season for the Panthers. Adelphi has won 29 consecutive regular season NE-10 matches, dating back three years.

"We are all very happy we were able to close out our toughest match this season with a 5-4 win on the road at Stonehill," head coach Michael Misiti stated. "I can confidently say the program Is where I want it to be and where I promised it would be when i came in three years ago. We are certainly celebrating the success we achieved through hard work and sacrifice, but starting tomorrow it's back to business. We are yet to win a conference title and that has been our only goal this season."
