Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Adelphi Athletics

No. 3 Women's Basketball Turned Away By No. 12 Stonehill College, 86-72

Easton, MA – Ranked third in the latest USA Today Sports Division II poll, the Adelphi University women's basketball program traveled to No. 12 Stonehill College to compete in cross-divisional Northeast-10 Conference action Wednesday evening.  The hosts came out on top, 86-72, handing the Panthers their first loss of the season to improve to 10-1 overall and 7-1 in league play. Adelphi drops to 13-1 on the season and 6-1 in the conference.

Four Brown and Gold members scored in double figures, led by Anh-Dao Tran who had 26 points and 8 rebounds in the loss. Kelly Mannix completed her eighth double-double this season, with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Jenna Halaby and Samantha Brenner each chipped in 10 points, combining for seven rebounds in the loss.  Leading the Skyhawk offense was Tori Faieta and Samantha Hyslip, who each scored 17 points in the win, combining for 23 rebounds.

Adelphi jumped out to an early 9-2 lead courtesy of a Halaby 3-pointer with 16:58 left on the clock. Stonehill fought their way back, pulling within three of the visitors, 15-12 as Skyhawk Kelly Martin drained a shot from the free throw line.

Stonehill took a 22-19 lead from a Courtney Walsh lay-in with 8:55 remaining in the first half, but the Panthers were quick to tie it back up (22-22) with a Mannix shot from beyond the arc. The hosts took hold of the lead at 6:08, 25-24 from back-to-back Martin free throws and never slowed. As the first half expired No. 12 Stonehill held a ten-point lead over visiting No. 3 Adelphi.

Coming out of the locker room the Purple and White showed no signs of slowing as they led by 18, 60-42 with 11:31 left in the second half. Adelphi cut the lead to 14 from another Mannix three-pointer, leaving room for a run to begin.

Unfortunately the Skyhawks pulled away to lead by as many as 20 (74-54) with less than five minutes on the clock. A 13-2 run over the next three minutes in favor of the Panthers would cut the host lead to 10, with contributions from Tran, Halaby and Brenner, but time would expire before Adelphi was able to capitalize, closing the game with a final score of 86-72.
