Garden City, N.Y. – After being postponed for two days due to inclement weather, the Adelphi University women's basketball team kicked off the spring semester by hosting the Ravens of Franklin Pierce University on Thursday night in the Center for Recreation and Sports. Behind a dominating 45-19 opening half, the Panthers picked up another Northeast-10 Conference win by a final score of 83-53.
Anh-Dao Tran led the scoring effort for the Brown and Gold (18-2, 11-2 NE-10), scoring a game-high 24 points, while
Calli Balfour chipped in 16 points. Off the bench, freshman Janté Bracewell had a big night for Adelphi, scoring 12 points in just 11 minutes of action. For the Ravens (10-6, 8-5 NE-10), Kara Charette tallied a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
After letting up a layup to Dyamond Gardner to start the game, the Panthers scored nine of the next 12 points to open up an early 9-5 lead. The Brown and Gold's early lead swelled to 20-7 behind 11 unanswered points, a run that was highlighted by six from Balfour.
Adelphi continued their strong shooting from the floor in the opening half, limiting Franklin Pierce's attempts to score. While Balfour and Tran totaled 25 points to lead the Brown and Gold's offensive charge, Bracewell came off the bench for Adelphi and provided an offensive spark as she scored six points and pulled down three boards in the half.
The freshman's final bucket of the half came with 1:06 remaining and opened the Adelphi lead to 40-16. In the final minute, the Panthers totaled five more points and went into the locker room with all the momentum after Balfour drained a mid-court three at the buzzer to lead 45-19.
In a second half that was more hotly contested, the Ravens held nearly even with the Panthers but could not chip into the deficit. Three consecutive threes from Tran highlighted the early second half scoring for the Brown and Gold, and her third in just two minutes of action brought the score to 58-24 with 16:40 remaining.
Another 10-0 run by Adelphi put the game out of reach as
Tara Flynn,
Jenna Halaby and
Ashley Gomez combined to double up the Ravens, 72-35. Despite scoring the final six points of the game, the Ravens would get no closer than the final of 83-53.
The Panthers return to action on Saturday, January 31 when they travel up north to Colchester, Vt. to take on the Purple Knights of St. Michael's College in a 1:30 p.m. NE-10 contest.
