Worcester, MA – The No. 7 Adelphi women's basketball program was unable to suppress the Assumption College Greyhounds Saturday afternoon as the hosts shot an impressive fifty percent (8-of-16) from three-point range to go on to win 89-87.
Adelphi (15-2/8-2 NE-10) was led by
Anh-Dao Tran who scored 26 points, had three assists and two steals despite the loss. Two other Panthers found themselves in double-figures as
Calli Balfour completed a double-double with 25 points and 10 rebounds while teammate
Kelly Mannix accounted for 14 points and three rebounds.
Assumption (11-5/6-5 NE-10) shot fifty percent (8-of-16) from beyond the arc, with four players in double-figures. Kelly Conley led all players with 33 points, grabbing five rebounds in the win.
Less than five seconds into the game Adelphi was on the board with a quick lay-in by Tran. At 18:45 with a score of 5-5, a Conley layup started a 10-2 run in favor of the Greyhounds that pushed them to a 15-7 lead.
With less than four minutes to play the Brown and Gold cut the Greyhound lead to one, trailing 24-23. Back-to-back shots from downtown, courtesy of Conley and Kelly Carey increased the Blue and White lead to 35-29. A technical foul called on Coach at the half allowed Tran to head to the line, resulting in back-to-back free throws made, cutting the home team lead to just six points.
Coming out of the locker room the Panthers quickly came within two of Assumption, with contributions from Mannix and Tran. A Mannix to Balfour combo tied the game at 50 apiece with less than fifteen minutes to play. Within a matter of five minutes, there were three tie scores and a Tran three-pointer with 10:51 left, which gave the Panthers their first lead since early in the first half, 59-56.
A turnover and offensive foul by Allison Stoddard returned possession to Adelphi as the visiting team trailed by two with 1:29 to play. Missed opportunities and late half fouls were no match as the Greyhounds went 9-for-13 at the charity stripe in the final minute of play. A Mannix late three-pointer at the buzzer was not enough as time expired and Assumption earned an 89-87 decision.
The team will return to action on Wednesday, January 21 as they travel to Southern New Hampshire for Northeast-10 Conference action.
