Garden City, NY- The Adelphi University field hockey team made a come from behind effort at the half to post a 3-2 decision in overtime against Mercyhurst University on Sunday afternoon. The Panthers and Lakers now hold a 1-1 record after opening weekend of play.
Rachel Colvin scored in the fifth minute of overtime to give the Panthers their first win of the season.
Olivia Nowokunski put the Panthers on the board near the middle of the first half on a pass from
Jamie Ahrens from the top of the circle. Mercyhurst answered back just minutes later, as Tracey Mason put a break-away shot in the back of the Panther cage. Just before the half came to a close, the Lakers would strike again to be up 2-1 heading into the locker room.
Tina Brindisi and
Briana Rubenstein each picked up defensive saves in the first half.
With 12:43 remaining in the second half,
Lena Pollich found a way past Wess off an initial shot from
Mary Plotas to tie the game at 2-2. Regulation time would play out as neither team was able to make a play on goal.
The Brown and Gold were granted a corner stroke in the fifth minute of overtime, which was taken by Colivn.
Molly Cuevas received the ball at the top of the circle from the corner and blasted it into the middle, to be tapped in by Colvin.
Adelphi will return to action next Saturday, September 13 to open up Northeast-10 Conference play against Assumption College at 1 p.m.
