Box Score Garden City, NY - The Adelphi University field hockey program picked up its fourth win of the season against non-conference opponent Mercy College Wednesday evening, shutting out the Mavericks by a score of 7-0. The Panthers roll to 4-1 overall as they handed the visitors their fifth consecutive loss.
Mary Plotas led the scoring line for the Brown and Gold with two goals in the victory. Five different Panthers each registered one goal apiece in the shutout;
Briana Rubenstein,
Lena Pollich and
Carly Aceves all scored in the first half, while
Molly Cuevas and
Olivia Nowokunski found a way past Mercy goalkeeper Olivia Kelly in the second half.
Olivia Nowokunski registered her second goal of the year and the final goal in the 7-0 victory. The hosts held the ball on the Maverick side of the field for majority of the game, but not before the visitors were granted three consecutive penalty strokes on which Rubenstein was able to pick up a defensive save. Plotas was the first to score, just five minutes in off a pass from
Kristen Bagley to lead 1-0. For her first goal of the season, Rubenstein landed a ball in the back of the cage off a penalty stroke to put Adelphi up 2-0.
Aceves registered her first goal of the season with just under five minutes to play til the teams broke for the locker room with the Panthers leading 5-0. An unassisted goal from Cuevas after the half followed by six more shots including four penalty corners and a final goal from Nowokunski made the game a 7-0 decision in favor of the home team.
"We worked hard but as always we need to look to the next game," said Head Coach
Gloria O'Connor. "We need to buckle down and focus on the conference opponents coming up before we head into league play for the remainder of the season."
The Panthers will travel to American International College on Saturday, September 27 to face the Yellow Jackets at 1 p.m. They will return to Long Island to play defending Northeast-10 Champions LIU Post on Tuesday September 30 at 4 p.m. in Brookeville, NY.
