Women's Tennis Shocks Stonehill, 5-4

Panthers hand Skyhawks first NE-10 loss of the season.

Katarina Barborikova upended two-time NE-10 Player of the Week Bailey Paradiso at No. 2 singles.
Garden City, N.Y. - Despite trailing 2-1 at the close of doubles play, the Adelphi University women's tennis team handed the Stonehill Skyhawks their first conference loss of the season, 5-4, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Panthers improve to 8-5 overall and 7-1 in the Northeast-10, while the Skyhakws drop to 15-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference.

Behind the play of Charlotte Moreau and Katarina Barborikova, the Panthers recorded their first point of the match at first doubles; Moreau and Barborikova easily dispatched Bailey Paradiso and Kaitlyn Martin, 8-1. However, the Skyhawks hit back by taking the second and third doubles points to pull into the lead, 2-1, heading into singles play.

Moreau and Barborikova translated their strong play to the singles court as neither dropped a set en route to their victories to nudge Adelphi ahead. Moreau saw off Kristi Toegemann, 6-4, 6-0, while Barborikova got the better of Paradiso yet again, 6-1, 6-4. The third and fourth matches proved to be the key for Adelphi, as both Joanna Haich and Gaby Adia saw themselves in tough battles against Meryl Lawrence and Analise Kump, respectively. Haich managed to hang on after dropping the second set to come away with a 6-4, 5-7, 7-5 win, and Adia pulled off the most improbable comeback of the day to seal the Brown and Gold victory. After being blanked in the opening set, she rallied to win, 0-6, 7-5, 7-5.
