Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team advanced to the Northeast-10 Championship for the first time in program history as they defeated the No. 3 seeded Stonehill College Skyhawks, 5-1, in the semifinals of the conference tournament on Friday afternoon. In their fifth year in the conference, the Panthers will face the top-seeded Warriors of Merrimack College in the Brown and Gold's debut in the conference finals. With the win, the Panthers run their winning streak to six matches and improve to 13-5 overall, while the Skyhawks drop to 17-7.
The Brown and Gold ranked seventh in the NCAA Division II East Regional rankings and eighth in the ITA East Regional rankings and earned a first round bye as the No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Panthers have played in all five NE-10 Tournaments since joining the NE-10 prior to the 2009-10 season.
The first match to finish came at No. 2 doubles, as an 8-0 win for Kirsti Toegemann and Meryl Lawrence over
Taylor King and
Jennifer Ferguson put the visitors on top, 1-0. However, the Panthers claimed both matches at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to take the lead heading into singles play.
Charlotte Moreau and
Katarina Barborikova picked up their eighth win in nine matches with an 8-3 triumph at top flight doubles to knot the score at 1-1, and
Gaby Adia and
Joanna Haich claimed a hard-fought 8-6 win to put the Brown and Gold in front.
Moreau and Barborikova also led the Panthers on the singles court, as each posted two-set wins at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. The pair put together nearly-identical performances to the ones that helped the Panthers defeat the Skyhawks in the regular season; Moreau upended Toegemann, 6-0, 6-2 while Barborikova saw off Paradiso, 6-2, 6-4. With the Panthers one match away from the victory, it was senior
Gaby Adia who delivered the clinching victory for the Brown and Gold. At No. 4 singles, Adia defeated Analise Kump, 7-5, 6-1 to put the Panthers into the championship.
