Women's Tennis Upends SNHU, 6-3

Panthers hand Penmen first conference loss of the season.

Syosset, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's tennis team played host to the regionally-ranked Penmen of Southern New Hampshire University on Saturday indoors at Sportime at Syosset. The Panthers, who suffered a pair of losses to the Penmen a season ago, managed to record a 6-3 win in a battle of NE-10 unbeatens. With the win, the Panthers improve to 5-4 overall and stay perfect in the NE-10 at 4-0. The Penmen, who've reached four consectuive NE-10 Tournament finals, drop to 8-3 overall and 4-1 in conference play.

The Panthers trailed 2-1 in the match at the close of doubles play, but managed to get on the board behind an 8-1 win by Gaby Adia and Joanna Haich at third doubles. The match would be decided on the singles court, as the Panthers claimed five of the six points to see themselves to victory.

The Panthers posted contrasting victories on the singles court, as Haich led the charge with a 6-2, 6-0 win at third singles. Katarina Barborikova proved similarly dominant in her match, as she conceded just four games en route to winning in the second spot. Taylor King rounded out the straight-set winners for Adelphi as she recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win at sixth singles.

The match came down to the fourth and fifth spots, and both Gaby Adia and Jennifer Ferguson found themselves in three-set battles. Adia rallied following the loss of the opening set to win 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 and Ferguson managed to hold steady in a back-and-forth affair to come out on top of a 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 match and seal the win for the Panthers.

Coach's Thoughts on the Match
"This was a great win for the team at a time when everything is coming together," Head Coach Michael Misiti stated. "This was an extremely difficult 6-3 win as this is only the second loss in regular season play for SNHU in over two years. I am extremely proud of all of the women."
