Women's Hoops Outlasts Saint Michael's in 78-76 Victory

Senior Sade Jackson was honored with a game ball before tip-off for being the 21st player in Adelphi history to score over 1,000 points in her career.

Garden City, N.Y. - The Adelphi University women's basketball team played host to non-divisional conference member Saint Michael's College in the Center for Recreation and Sports, Saturday afternoon. Despite a 45-point second half for the Purple Knights, Adelphi came away with a 78-76 victory. The win improves the Panthers to 15-5 overall and 9-5 in Northeast-10 conference play. The Knights drop to 3-15 overall and 2-12 in the conference.

Leading all players on offense was Jessica Kitrys, who shot 8-12 from the field and accounted for 19 points in total. Freshman Calli Balfour came off the bench to contribute 12 points and grabbed five boards in the win. Kelly Mannix was the third Brown and Gold member to reach double-digits, scoring 11 on the day, with six rebounds of her own.

Five Purple Knights found themselves in double-figures with Megan Gaudreau leading the pack with 17. Indira Evora was a perfect 6-6 at the charity stripe and was responsible for 13 points in the loss.

The visitors jumped out to a quick 6-2 lead under two minutes into the game. However, contributions from Sade Jackson and Jessica Kitrys would even the score at 6-6. With the momentum in favor of the Panthers, Adelphi would commit a 9-3 run that would give them a five point lead, 15-10, with 12:43 remaining in the half.

The Brown and Gold would continue to lead Saint Michael's for the remainder of the first half, with their largest margin at 38-23, with under three to go. At halftime, the Panthers led the Purple Knights 40-31 with an 11-point first half by Mannix.

Coming out of the locker room, the Purple Knights used a 9-0 run to cut the Panthers lead to 43-40 before a two-pointer by Kitrys making the score 46-40. Saint Mike's regained the lead 49-47 at the 15:36 mark in the second half on an Evora three-pointer.

Balfour brought the game within one, on a triple at the 13:49 mark. The Panthers regained the lead 52-51 when Kitrys made a two-point shot. A 6-0 run by Adelphi would give them a 61-54 lead with under ten minutes to play.

In a back-and-forth second half the Panthers and Purple Knights changed leads four times before the Panthers regained the lead 76-71. The Purple Knights would tie the game at 76-76 before Cara Deroy fouled Sade Jackson, who hit two free throws to give the Panthers the lead and the win with two seconds left.

Jackson was also honored before the game for being the 21st player in Adelphi history to score a career 1,000 points.
