Tran, Mannix Each Score 19, Earn Women's Hoops Eighth Straight Over New Haven, 88-73

Garden City N.Y. – The Adelphi University women's basketball team competed in its fifth Northeast-10 conference matchup against New Haven in the Center for Recreation and Sport on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers posed a challenge to the Chargers for a close game, but took the 88-73 victory. The Brown and Gold advance to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in the NE-10 as the visitors fall to 6-2 season and 2-3 in conference.

Leading the offensive end for the Panthers was Kelly Mannix who completed her seventh double-double with 19 points and 16 rebounds. Anh-Dao Tran matched offensive points with Mannix for a total of 19. Sierra Clark, and Jenna Halaby totaled 25 points combined. Nearly, missing a double-double was Calli Balfour, who posted 11 points and 9 rebounds in the win.

For the Chargers, Aquillin Hayes posted a team high and a double-double figure with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Right behind her, Bria Moore with the second highest points with 20. Also, in double figures was Ashley Le Blanc with 12 points and 11 rebounds.

The first half started with a Moore layup for New Haven four seconds in. Shortly after, a Panther layup by Balfour tied the score 2-2. Both teams battled for points while maintaining a close score before a Balfour layup at 15:30 took a six point lead for Adelphi. The Chargers took hold of the score with a jump shot made by Moore at 13:59 closing the point gap to three. In the course of two minutes, the Panthers scored total 10 points to take an eight point lead of 25-16 at 9:00.

Adelphi's double figure point streak left New Haven with minimal shot opportunity. However, at 2:07, a jump shot made by Hayes put the Chargers back in the game, but the Brown and Gold took the opportunity to answer with a layup by Halaby. Soon after, a Chargers' jumper made by Moore closed the point gap, but not enough to dent the score. The Panthers ended the first half with a Balfour tip in to take a 39-28 lead.

A Blue and Gold jumper by Hayes opened the second half to close the 11-point spread. The Chargers fought for points, and at 18:04 consecutive Hayes jumpers pulled New Haven within a 39-36 score. In the following two minutes, a three pointer by Mannix regained the high point lead for Adelphi. A Moore layup put the Chargers two points behind for a 43-41 score at 14:54, and fter a back-and-forth point challenge, Tara Flynn took the Panther lead to eight points with a three point shot at 12:28.

For majority of the second half, it remained a close game with the Chargers consistently closing the gap. A Brown and Gold double-figure point streak came into play after consecutive three pointers by Mannix. After a collective six-point rally for the Chargers, they cut the point spread to five for a 62-57 score at 7:36. In the duration of six minutes, the Brown and Gold totaled 17 points ending at 1:56. The Chargers were kept off the board, and the Panthers went home with an 88-73 win.

The team returns to the Center for Recreation and Sport on Thursday, December 11 as they take on a non-conference contest against Goldey-Beacom College at 5:30 p.m.
